Fields
All completed fields will be included in the the search.
Case
All searches are case insensitive, i.e. Borthwick is treated like borthwick.
Boolean operators
Search terms work like Google, using Boolean operators, see details below.
Search Example Action
Borthwick Search for records containing Borthwick.
Lord Borthwick Search for records containing Lord AND Borthwick.
Lord AND Borthwick Unless specifically entered AND is implied.
Borthwick OR Bortrick Search for records containing Borthwick OR Bortrick.
Note: Searches with OR can take several seconds and often return a large number of results.
OR searches are most useful in conjunction with other operators, e.g. Lord AND (Borthwick OR Bortrick).
AND takes precedence over OR, eg. Lord Borthwick OR Bortrick is evaluated as (Lord AND Borthwick) OR Bortrick.
Force a change to the order so that OR is evaluated first by using brackets, eg Lord (Borthwick OR Bortrick).
"Lord Borthwick" Search for records containing the PHRASE Lord Borthwick.
"Lord Borthwick" -Glasgow Search for records containing the PHRASE Lord Borthwick BUT NOT the word Glasgow
Bort* Search for records containing the prefix Bort (wildcard search)
Note: Wildcard character (*) must be the last character.
Search terms cannot begin with wildcard character.
Wildcard searches must be minimum 4 characters.
Accents
Accents are included by searching the un-accented character.
Search term length
Minimum search term length is 3 characters – 4 for wildcards (see below).
