SCOTLAND - DUNSTAFFNAGE CASTLE

Dunstaffnage Castle is located to the north of Oban on the West Coast of Scotland, formerly the island of Archinch. It was at an early date one of the seats of the Dalriadic Kings and contained the Lia Fail or Stone of Destiny. This was though removed to Scone by KENNETH I (surnamed Macalpin) c 850. and then to Westminster Abbey in 1296. The Stone was returned to Scotland on Saint Andrews' Day in 1996 and can now be seen in Edinburgh Castle. The present castle dates from c.1250 when it was built for the great House of Ergadia. Both Alexander de Ergadia and his son John of Lorn were bitterly hostile to ROBERT I, who finally defeated them and took Dunstaffnage in 1308. Instead of destroying the castle, ROBERT placed as Constable there Sir Arthur Campbell. Dunstaffnage is today a ruin as was destroyed by fire in 1810.
