WALES - HARLECH CASTLE
Harlech Castle is situated near Gwynedd in north Wales looking to Snowdonia. Like many other castles in Wales it was built by King Edward I as part of his
defences and Harlech formed part of the "iron ring" of castles surrounding the coastal fringes of Snowdonia. Work on the castle began in 1283 and was designed by Master James of St George a master mason and responsible for around 17 of King Edward's Welsh castles.
Harlech Castle today is a ruin although much has survived and panoramic views of Snowdonia can be enjoyed from its battlements. The castle is a World Heritage Inscribed site and is open to the public throughout the year.
