Kilkenny Castle dates from the 12th Century and was once home to the Butlers, Earls and Dukes of Ormonde. The family occupied the castle from 1391 until 1935 when the castle was sold due to the rising costs of maintaining such a structure. It was bought by the city and is today open to the public. Attractions include the extensive grounds, rose garden, fountain and bookshop.
