Kent, previous creations:
Odo Bishop of Bayeux, the celebrated
half-brother of WILLIAM I (THE CONQUEROR) through Herleve/Harlotte, was made
Earl of Kent shortly after Hastings. He was deprived of the dignity many years
later after rebelling against WILLIAM II and on his death the Earldom expired
in any case. It was revived in February 1226/7 for Hubert de Burgh (for whom see against Gloucester, previous creations above). Although Hugh had sons
living at his death the Earldom expired with him. It was again revived, this
time for EDMUND of Woodstock, EDWARD I's youngest son, in 1321. For the
subsequent history of this creation see
WAKE, Bt. For the Earldom of Kent of the 1461 creation see ABERGAVENNY, M. For the Earldom of Kent of the 1465 creation see GREY, B. For the Marquessate and
Dukedom of Kent created in 1706 and 1710 respectively, see LUCAS OF CRUDWELL, B. The first royal Dukedom of Kent was
conferred on PRINCE EDWARD, GEORGE III's fourth son and the father of QUEEN
VICTORIA. It expired with his death in 1820. VICTORIA's second son the DUKE OF
EDINBURGH, so created in 1866, was given as one of his subsidiary titles an
Earldom of Kent.
St Andrews, previous creations:
WILLIAM IV before ascending the throne was made DUKE OF CLARENCE and ST ANDREWS, though usually
known by the first half of the title only. On his succeeding his elder brother
GEORGE IV, the Dukedom merged with the Crown. For other titles incorporating
the place name St Andrews see
STRATHEDEN and CAMPBELL, B, and 1939 edn PLAYFAIR, B.
