ACCESSION

Accession is a term meaning to ascend or to take up office. In this instance it is used to describe the accession of the future monarch to office.

The current monarch, HM Queen Elizabeth II, ascended to office on the death of her father, King George VI on February 6th 1952.

The coronation of the new monarch however takes place much later after a period of mourning. The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II took place on the 2nd June 1953. In 2002 the Queen celebrated 50 years since her accession and the event was marked by Jubilee celebrations throughout the country.
